Note: Something you should look for in titles from now on is "HDR" or "HDR10".  It's a type of color adjustment.  If you do nothing, the playback may be too dark, washed out or strange colors.

Options:
1. Skip HDR / HDR10 titles like this one

2. Get K-lite.  After install, select from the non-fullscreen menu: Options/Playback/Output/DrectShow Video/madVR.  Then you're all set, as long as your hardware can handle it.  You might find it to be better for all shows, HDR or not.  --It's probably not the default on install because not every machine can run it.
---------------------
VLC: I see no provision for HDR on VLC as of the latest download.  You'll have to settle for the playback such as it is.

Is this a fad or will it become standard?  --Don't know.

People who know more should add to this note, especially about VLC or other players.

Or simply stop being poor and buy yourself a modern 4K TV... they're really cheap.

I download with my laptop, and do a lot of watching while traveling.  I don't know if new laptops are HDR/4k but I figure some years until I buy my next one.

If you do nothing, the playback may be too dark, washed out..."

Funny you said that because the 3 screenshots on this page looked really washed out to me.
Very curious if that's how the show is supposed to be or if it's a byproduct of what you're describing...

All screenshots of HDR material are that way because of the way HDR information is stored. It's not "part" of the image/video, it's another layer, and the method of taking screenshots simply don't capture it.

If you have an actual HDR compatible screen, the colors will look gorgeous when playing it.

Thank you for that info. (I'm the one who wondered "if that's how the show is supposed to be...")
Having said that I downloaded the movie out of curiosity and took screenshots using different settings:

EVR Custom Presenter - https://files.catbox.moe/kb8wdz.png

madVR - https://files.catbox.moe/k8dwks.png

Such a huge difference! But now I'm gonna dig around to see why madVR can show those rich colors but EVR doesn't.
(I don't have a problem, I'm just curious about this kind of thing is all...)

Thanks for the comparisons.  Very useful.

So here's a thought question:  If it were possible, do you think AT should show converted preview pictures (madvr) or standard, like EVR, to provide a clue that a show might be HDR if the encoder forgot to include that in the file name?

Gonna sign in so I can stop saying "I'm the one who..." :p  Anyway that's an interesting question. On the one hand I'd really like seeing madvr previews on HDR vids because it would be useful; but on the other hand I hate the idea of making more work for somebody else, who already does so much for free.

Best inbetween solution would be for people like us to add a note in the comments (like the first anon above) when we spot HDR releases. Even better would be if somebody could add screenshots. (Yeah, I know I'm too hopeful, lol).

That's ok, admin lives for those tasty souls.  Your reflection won't show up in mirrors for anyone else to see anymore, except yourself.  Otherwise, you won't notice much.

-oh yeah, automatic doors may not open for you as often, and  automatic collision avoidance systems in cars will think you are nothing but warm space.  But leaving your house or looking in mirror just take away from anime-watching time.

'leaving your house'

what is that, a new game?

To my knowledge, there's no way to do HDR in images on a web page (other than embed a single frame video), even if you have a HDR compatible screen.
This means that converting to standard colour is really the only solution, though it means that the screenshots will have some loss.
Unfortunately, tooling around such conversions seems to be limited at this stage, so difficult to do much. I plan to wait to see if tooling improves, particularly, if ffmpeg can do this automatically (without manually specifying tone mappings and such).

The 5th preview picture is the Netflix logo.  You will probably know is supposed to be bright red.

P.S.  Also, madVR makes it possible to play these files as normal ones but doesn't give you any of the benefits of the enhanced technology, I don't think.

Honestly I never paid attention to the netflix logo as weird as that sounds.
I've seen the logo of course but never wanted or used netflix... so I didn't really know. Thank you! :)
