I've thought about checking out the movie, but I've never watched the TV series. Should I watch the TV series, then the movie, or can I go into the movie with no knowledge of the TV series.

The movie (Fairy Tail: The Phoenix Priestess) is a side-story, not a re-cap or a continuation of a specific previous story. You won't know the main characters, but the premise of Fairy Tail is simple enough: Wizards/magician/mages for hire. So it should be enjoyable enough as a stand-alone work. That's my impression from watching the first half-hour.

I had thought about checking Fairy Tail out, but I'm more in favor of fanservice (Lucy, Erza, the other girls) than manservice (What's with the one guy who likes to get naked all the time!?). Also, I didn't know how many episodes it was gonna be, and apparently it's not over yet (according to its creator).

The earily stories are in small arcs. If you watched the first 8 eps or so, I think you'd have met everybody.

The fanservice maxes in the OVA's -but they're strangely hard to get. I had to find them again today due to a disk crash. I think 5 and 4 were here and 1 - 3 at ChauThanh. Even some of the groups that subbed them didn't have them available anymore.
