Can someone compare the quality between this episode (AV1) and this https://animetosho.org/view/yofukashi-...kv.1676673 (HEVC2)? The quality looks a bit unreal and washed-out, also there is a post lagging when skipping backward and forward (didn't happen with normal h264/x265/mpeg/..)

The question I ask myself is what do I gain with AV1? Nothing, so I'd get hevc if there's a choice. The question then is would I take AV1 if there is no choice, like a BD release when nothing else has links right now. Yes, of course. It's good enough, upgrade later.

The source is notably bad, and no one except aergia is bothering with a filtered encode to fix the video. All other options suffer from the source's issue + whatever issues were introduced by the mini encoder's choice. In summary get aergia

For the weak characters, plot and visuals, this show is worth about 250mb a week to me.

A group recently did tests on a Ghibi movie, about 200mb each, hevc and av1. I didn't see much of a difference. The group said they would stay with hevc due to the processing time involved in creating av1, so I guess they didn't see enough of a difference either. They were expecting the AV1 to be significant better at the same size as a hevc.
