Screenshots are taken at preset times, my guess is bad timing.

Indeed. Should be doable to make it detected if a frame is just black and move to a different one, though.

Thanks for the suggestion.
Unfortunately the frames aren't actually pure black (increase contrast and zoom in to see), which means you'd have to implement some 'image complexity' detection.
Which is theoretically doable, but frame selection can get a little icky to implement (particularly given that the screenshots here only work on I frames). If you know of some robust 'complexity' detector though, I can keep it a consideration.
