Series (!)Ao no Hako - Episode 8 (of 25): Score!
CommentSubtitles translated using AI by one X/Twitter user as an experiment to confirm that AI is a real option for translation and can maintain context well. They need a little polish here and there, but still the viewing experience is much better than Netflix ones. These are not my subtitles, I just muxed with raw episode.

No, you shut up, stupid fucking ESL retard.
14/11/2024 17:55 — Anonymous
another day of garbage subs. i'd rather wait for erai-raws or some other group to pick this up.
14/11/2024 19:07 — Anonymous
cry more lmao
14/11/2024 19:37 — Anonymous
i'd rather have actual fans fan-translate this rather than being spoon-fed by an AI. maybe you should kill yourself?
14/11/2024 20:11 — Anonymous
Me too, but good fansubs died a long time ago. It's sad, but I'm not gonna kill myself because of it.
14/11/2024 21:23 — Anonymous
Shame. Maybe AI could replace you.
14/11/2024 20:34 — Anonymous
When Tezu did his fansubs for Ao no Orchestra that were really good and accurate but had just a few typos, you were complaining about these meaningless typos instead "rather having actual fans fan-translate it" and be happy.
You're full of shit. People like you will always find something to cry about.
14/11/2024 21:24 — Anonymous
Dude I don't even know who you are. You're clearly upset, go take your schizo meds. I only trust reputable uploaders or fansubbing groups. Not sure what your dmg is.
15/11/2024 00:42 — Anonymous
Tezu ruined his subs by putting shitty British pronunciations and slang. Nobody fucking wants to see that shit in anime.
14/11/2024 20:10 — Anonymous
Can you just shut up, you imbecile?

From last episode:

According to Netflix こくはく/ 告白 means date (text on the video). No it doesn't. Kokuhaku is a confession. In this case confession of feelings. It's not just "asking out" or "confessing" - it's a formal declaration of love that marks the start of a relationship in Japan. It changes entire dynamic between two people.
AI got it right of course.

Of course since Netflix idiots aren't using honorifics, they need to make many things up. Chinatsu is calling Taiki with -kun honorific. They just made her call him "Tai" when she dropped the -kun. A truly brilliant idea. Of course AI didn't have this problem because all honorifics are properly used.

Next, they are going along with earlier mistranslation and instead of talking about confession, they are talking about asking out. This is a huge fucking difference from Taiki's perspective and his goals. And this is another key point in characterization. AI got it right again.

Hina's teasing taiki with 雛様特製弁当 作ってあげる～
Netflix: I'll make you a special homemade bento!
Unfortunately, again, what's missing here is what makes Hina Hina. She is playful, bold and makes it feel like she has known him for many years. That's why her playful teasing (recurring) of self-reference as Hina-sama seems spot on and natural. In Netflix's translation, this line is no different from what any other character would say.

There's a lot of other bigger or smaller inaccuracies in Netflix subs like these. For example Chinatsu is calling Hina by her family name and with honorific -san, which means that she aren't treating her as her friend or even someone she know, so she's talking about her and to her with respect. Which is yet again lost in Netflix subs, so yet another example of changing the character personality. But I'm to lazy to write more. Be grateful that I spent a few minutes replying to clown like you.

ESL retard who wants to be spoon-fed honorifics LOL
14/11/2024 21:42 — Anonymous
Kind sir, where is l'argument?
14/11/2024 22:59 — Anonymous
My argument is that you're protesting too much about a translation by Netflix that is relatively fine. "Netflix idiots aren't using honorifics," Wow big whoop. Get a real job. As I said, you are an ESL retard who wants to be spoon-fed.
16/11/2024 00:40 — Anonymous

15/11/2024 00:42 — Anonymous
Again you aren't Asian and don't speak the language and no nothing about the country except what you see in cartoons but run your mouth like you are an expert on all things Japanese and how the language should be translated??? Classic!!! The idiocy of spoon fed white kids. Japan would deport your ass if you made a scene in public there like you do in here but you don't know that because anime makes you an expert.  Other nationalities just love when white kids act like they are experts on non-white people. They just love it. Its so respectful!!! Someone who doesn't do crap for the world except waste oxygen cries over dumb crap like a child but whats new....
15/11/2024 00:44 — Anonymous
Meant 'know' not 'no' but who cares....
15/11/2024 01:04 — Anonymous
If your preference is to have honorifics that is perfectly fine. No one will fault you for that but instead you act like a child without a pacifier over something that you don't have to watch . You have plenty of other options but you come in here and act like a fucking 6 month old child over subs? Sure some enjoy honorifics. Personally I don't care either way. I speak English. I speak a little French and Spanish but only a little. I'm certainly not going to have the audacity to make a scene for no reason other than I want everything my way the way I say it and only that way like you do. You are a fucking spoiled child with very little maturity. Grow up. I don't know your age but mentally you are around 7 years old. If these subs were your only option maybe more would side with you but you literally have dozens of options but you for some reason need to make hundreds of posts over Ai subs because they aren't you way? You not speaking the language and crying like this makes you look even more pathetic. Grow up kid. I sure as hell hope you aren't an adult because if you are that's far worse and you need some major therapy annd medication.
What makes you look even more stupid is the way you cry about Ai knowing nothing about it. Ai translation is still in its infancy but as technology gets better everything gets better except for maybe the keyboard warriors that go crazy over stupid shit. Technology has come light years since the first home pcs in the early 80s. Things take time. Anyone learning a new language isn't even fluent in it in most cases for years. Expecting everything to be perfect immediately is idiocy. Ai translation has come a long way and not all Ai`s are shit. You cant compare some free shit online like Google translate to some of these high end billion dollar Ai servers. Sure Google has a lot of cool stuff but Google translate is horrendous. It has gotten slightly better over the years but not by much. Its still trash. maybe you should try to actually learn something for once. If not you will have major problems all your life. If you spaz out like this over stupid stuff in public as an adult it wont go well for you.
15/11/2024 00:44 — Anonymous
None of what you mentioned actually matters. Netflix's subs are perfectly fine.
15/11/2024 07:00 — Anonymous
NOOO YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND NETFLIX DIDN'T 1:1 THE SUBTITLES THEY CHANGED ALL MEANING!!! IT MEANS LESS NOW!!

It's easy to tell that they have no understanding of Japanese, or how translation works.

It's easy to tell that you're just a regular troll looking for attention.
If you actually had any will to discuss, you would address something. But it's better to troll and then still play the victim. Instead, you choose to be a clown.

You are literally complaining about honorifics and minor language differences. Take a gun to your head and pull the trigger. The world is better off without you.

Thank you for this. I appreciate your subtitles. Don’t let the negative comments get to you. They're just afraid and insecure that an AI can do a better job than Netflix’s official translators, who are getting paid to deliver subpar subtitles. I haven't seen a single valid criticism yet, all they do is throw insults, calling others 'ESL retards.' I spent three years in Japan, learning as much as I could while balancing work and study. I've compared both subtitles, and yours are clearly superior. People who criticize without a single valid argument only prove my point.
15/11/2024 01:17 — Anonymous
>I spent three years in Japan, learning as much as I could while balancing work and study.

Sure you did. That is nowhere near enough to become fluent in Japanese. You are bullshitting. Fuck off.
15/11/2024 02:28 * — TsunaSetsu
You're still not arguing anything related to the subtitles. Thanks for proving my point. I never said I'm fluent. I know reading is hard but give it try. I learned as much as I could and I'm still learning today.
15/11/2024 13:03 — Anonymous
Is there a reason the release notes just say "one X/Twitter user" rather than actually citing thier source who could probably provide more details? I do get that AI bros using stuff without consent and plagarism go hand-in-hand.

It would interesting to know what type of translation model is used (as some people use AI to refer to copy pasting lines into deepl) and how many iterations, prompts and proofreading it took (this is the bit people really dislike of being capable of mass produced slop). I know people love to treat the prompts as the secret sauce (that's the model; which is a black box to many end users) but it would be like doing the same for video encoding, it doesn't help the community.
15/11/2024 18:09 — Anonymous
They do it purely to dickwave. "I'm using a model that's good for translation! But I won't tell you what it is."
15/11/2024 23:38 — Anonymous
Actually now that you mention it -- that's pretty suspicious lol

"So why are you here? if you can't pick a side"

I'm here for the torrents and while I'm here I check out the comments.

"you're not better than the anti-AI retards"

I'm better than the anti and pro AI tards I see here. I don't waste my time arguing over some useless topic where you won't change anyone's mind.
15/11/2024 19:12 — Anonymous
They're just a troll here, what do you expect? I'm pretty sure they don't even watch the show.
15/11/2024 23:40 — Anonymous
I'm here to spread the gospel of AI translations. Soon there will be more of us. Your fan sub groups aren't safe. Once we conquer anime piracy, we'll overturn the megacorpos like Wokeflix. It's because I chose a side. It's not trolling to sincerely believe in the beauty of AI.
16/11/2024 00:34 — Anonymous
> sincerely believe in the beauty of AI

Are you William Gibson or a 30 year old doctor working at a rural clinic? Both believe in the beauty of Ai, the perfect liar and perfect idoru.

I'm a realist. Unlike you. AI is gonna change the game, its best to buy in now than be a poor
17/11/2024 20:09 — Anonymous
Buy what? Pay access to shitty LLMs by greedy companies that can't translate and constantly hallucinate, ignore your requests, and are censored?

Let me guess, you also bought into crypto and NFTs with your "realist" mentality?

Stupid clown! Crypto is the future of money!
In just a year, BTC price has gone up 6x from 15000 to 90000, yet an idiot like you talks shit about it!!! 0.o
20/11/2024 11:32 — Anonymous
lmao, I'm already 50% out of the market. And that 50% is about 1200%+ of my initial investment. I'm leaving the rest for speculation for now in many promising crypto projects.
If you're losing on crypto, you're simply dumb, that's all.
21/11/2024 00:07 — Anonymous
Trump gonna get those bitcoin stocks up. AI will be invested in, Wall Street guys know where the real money is at. I'm following their lead and playing my cards right. Unlike these guys I know AI is the future. Maybe not now, but with enough investment--it will be possible.
17/11/2024 14:34 — Anonymous
so funny that guys who've never done anything in their entire life to preserve anime are going to bat for AI translations. The leeches who live off anime piracy are now turning around suggesting they should be rewarded for making worse translations of existing shows. I'd take AI guys more seriously if they actually contributed to anime piracy in the first place but it's just Amerifats and ESL retards who're addicted to lard and salted butter. Wake me up when the AI guys preserve and upload long dead OVAs from the 80s and 90s.

Get a real job or actually contribute to the anime piracy space. If you're getting an AI to do it for you, then I think you're a lazy shill. I'd rather trust a random fansub translation over this, at least they care.
