an iso file is merely an image of a cd. it ain't gonna make your computer blow up. it's probably just a virus wrapped around some dumb american cartoon. don't run the exe and you won't get the virus. there's no such thing as a virus that spreads itself.

At least with iso there is autoplay if you have an old system and/or configured it wrong (or are the type to click go when it asks).
Dunno why they use iso though, on modern systems autoplay is by default deactivated but selfextracting archives & such would actually allow autostart on more systems but yeah ...

iso acts as a zip.  scr inside it acts as an exe

Fewer takers when he offered an exe in a zip.

I dont think that matters on the ppl who dl this (and on autoexec they dont even notice an exe). But I just thought i might be that isos are likely to be mounted and thus unlikely to be deleted, while archives are often scanned in advance.

Evil intent, beyond that don't care.

Click on the iso on the AT page and you can see it's contents, for any who didn't know that.

Here's the included .scr file 7zipped and uploaded to virustotal. I foolishly double-clicked this file before realizing it was a .scr file. Multiple system scans by multiple A/V / AntiMalware programs haven't turned anything up, but this online scan suggests there are trojans in the exe.

The interesting thing for me is that this big 810 MB file has been shrunk to 10 MB after compression!!!
21/04/2023 13:24 — Anonymous
Yeah it was necessary to attempt to compress as virustotal has a 650mb upload limit.
21/04/2023 14:56 — Anonymous
That's right. No problem. I meant compressing an 810 MB video file won't make it smaller than 700 MB at most with the strongest compression methods. (While compressing many video files from here, actually don't change their size more than 10-12 MB). And that's why it was interesting.

For sure! I was surprised to see the ratio as well and it reconfirmed my fears that this was mostly garbage. Felt like an idiot for running it but the icon was I think the Windows Media Player icon and I just wasn't thinking. Didn't get a privilege elevation windows, but when i went to delete the file it was in use, rebooted and deleted. Currently running like the fifth scan from a different vendor (one listed as having flagged this on virustotal). So we'll see. probably should just plan to wipe and start over.

the question is whether the perp is randomly malicious or going after personal and financial info.  If you bank online, change your passwords after you're clean.
21/04/2023 19:38 — Anonymous
Yeah, I've seen that f.e. with https://www.memtest86.com/ - 5MB dl, extracts ~500MB, sometimes it full nothing if you get the meaning.

Small clue: If it's not anime here, it's bait.
21/04/2023 17:45 — Anonymous
True, however in my case the file didn't originate here, but some googling around the filename brought me to this conversation. This is on a few usenet indexers and there's less discussion around it there.

In that case, just to mention what comes to mind:

-ISO is typically used for DVD disk images, though it acts like a zip.  There would be no reason for it to exist for new episodes of a current show.

-as mentioned above, scr files act exactly as exe files.

-I assume no one would go to the trouble of doing this except for financial gain so it could be very professional.  It might launch a program to collect your info, then 'phone home' to send the info to a site, then delete itself to leave no traces.  A victim should be wary of current financial accounts being compromised and fictitious accounts being opened with their information.  There are professional services which will look for such activities, if you feel the need.

-Unzipping alone might not do anything without also clicking on the scr.

Virus/malware threats:

Blocking all iso here seems quite reasonable.  Given the small chance of a legitimate iso and the even smaller chance that someone here will want it and the trivial effort involved in asking for it to be manually fetched seems like nothing compared to --accidents.
