It looks like CR (or the tools being used to rip CR's scripts) is having an issue with signs on the English subs?

This episode has numerous sign subs that are set so far out of place, that they either partially or entirely render off-screen.

Digging into the ASS file, the subs seem to be designed for a 640x360 pixel window, but the sign positioning is based around a 1920x1080 window. So anything with a non-default position gets rendered in the wrong spot - usually well off-screen.

The odd bit is that it's just the English subs that have this problem. The other languages I check have the same 640x360 viewport, but the sign positions are correct for that viewport.

I noticed this same issue with Dan da dan's last two episodes. I cross checked it on CR and found that it's not rendering there also. So it might be an issue from the licensor who is providing the subs to CR, which in these cases is aniplex iirc.

Interesting. I don't watch any other Aniplex shows, but a source issue would certainly explain why this is happening, and why it hasn't been noticed sooner. Especially with only the signs being affected, a cursory QA check won't pick up anything as being obviously wrong.

For that matter, it looks like S02E04 had the same problem; so this started last week. But that episode had a minimum of signs - whereas this one is full of them - which also made it easier for the issue to slip by unnoticed.

Anyhow, I've gone ahead and modified the English subs to account for the 360p viewport. It appears that Aniplex/CR was doing the exact same thing for their subs in the earlier unbroken episodes - that is, doing the initial positioning in 1080p and then scaling down the position for a 360p viewport - so this should be identical to how they'd look if they didn't bungle the subs.

Just save it as an ASS file. Muxing it in to the video with MKVToolNix isn't necessary, but would be a good idea for long-term storage.

CR subtitles are always done in 360p to discourage leaking. Getting signs to render properly in 1080p requires resampling and an automation script in Aegisub to correct perspectives when resampling the subtitles from 360p to 1080p. ToonsHub probably does not do such a step.

The subs will still render fine when auto-scaled as long as the X/Y and positioning are using the same resolution. Actually not the case here, as the subs for this ep have been set with a 1080p resolution for \pos but the PlayResX and Y are still set to 360 meaning the positioning is waaaaay out of whack. (The same for all subs that I checked, so I expect it is a CR thing.)

Solvable in this case by setting PlayResX and Y to 1080p counts.

The one issue with just changing the PlayRes resolution is that the resulting text ends up being much smaller than intended, making it hard to read. The fonts used in these subs are all size 20; which is quite small by the standard of video subtitles. When defined against a 360p PlayRes, they get scaled up to match the final output resolution, but no such scaling occurs if PlayRes is set to 1080p.

One way or another, the text needs scaled up to be comfortably readable. And since messing with font size or using hard-coded scaling creates some other text display issues with text outlines and margins, it ended up being easier to just fix the position of the signs to account for the 360p PlayRes viewport. Which is what CR was (apparently) doing up until the last two weeks.

Just use aegisub's proper subtitle rescaling script

What you want to use isn't that in this situation. LayoutRes is better suited for this (unless you're redoing the typesetting entirely yourself).

alternatively all of this could be avoided if you practiced some patience and waited for Arid's fansubs, which have a far better translation and actually good typesetting

You honestly think terminally online people will with attention spans as short as a thumb, will be patient enough to wait for something better?

True, but it's my fault for taking too long in the first place
