The English subtitles don't display properly- at least in VLC.

Eng subs work OK on VLC here.

Fixed, when I checked in VLC, it stated I had the latest version (3.0.20). Their website had a different version (3.0.21).

Or just make the choice to stop using VLC due to subtitle issues
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Or just make the choice to stop grabbing AV1 due to subtitle issues
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Yeah because the video track has everything to do with a video player that has issues playing a subtitle track....

If you have issues playing av1 files on your favorite player it's easier to just not grab av1.
Why go through the hassle of setting up and learning a new player when there are other releases to grab?

You seem to have missed the point they were making: The video track/codec has nothing to do with how the player handles or renders subtitles. If the mashed potatoes (subtitles) are sad and gluey you don't blame it on the steak (video). You also wouldn't eat steak with a spoon (subpar video player) either. Sounds silly when it's put that way, right? That's how silly it sounds to those of us in the scene when we keep hearing this aversion to change (for the better, mind you).

Ultimately it's your choice whether or not you want a flawless or subpar experience,

I think the point was if you are having issues with AV1 files just quit downloading them.

They're having issues with rendering subtitles, not displaying the video. Even if they were to avoid AV1 and instead get an equivalent HEVC release they would have the exact same issue - not rendering the same subtitles correctly. There's nothing special about any particular codec that allows their media player to render subtitles correctly or not. Those subtitles either work or they don't. On a side note: Developers of VLC are responsible for the most ubiquitous AV1 software decoder in use today: Dav1d. It's no surprise that AV1 displays properly in VLC - in spite of all the issues we've come across.

VLC users are for whatever reasons often running out-of-date software or are unfortunately on buggy versions. This is the reason why most of the people on the scene recommend MPV over VLC without providing details or additional tech support. It's understandable why - the amount of complaints we've seen regarding subtitle rendering or audio playback on VLC vastly outnumbers the complaints we've seen with MPV (we've seen only a handful of complaints and they have nothing to do with playback).

While we don't subscribe to telling people what software they should be running - by all means choose what works best for you - there has to be a point where you pause to consider "Is my media player up-to-date?", "Is this the best solution?", or "Should I try something else?". Consider expanding your options instead of compromising on them. Again, use what you want but don't be surprised if your experience doesn't meet your expectations.

Have a nice day,
-Sav1or

Maybe dude thinks "av1" is a type of subtitle track. "av1 subtitle tracks suck! People should just use .ass or .srt lol"

You should probably stop using VLC anyways, it's a fucking terrible player. https://rentry.co/vee-ell-cee

Guys, I just updated windows to 24H2, from 23H2 everything is smooth and snappy. There is no forced bitlocker encryption, no windows recall... blah blah. DONT FUCKING BELIEVE YOUTUBERS, they gave me hardtime. My spec is a bit old with 8gb ram, 512ssd,Intel i5 8th family ... But it perfectly works with AV1 encodes using vlc nightlies build, try this version <B>vlc-4.0.0-dev-win64-6210ebe9.7z<B>

I run VLC 3.0.16 (not the newest) on old hardware with W7 and it plays AV1 just fine.

have you tried nightlies yet? I love the new ui, maybe I'm addicted to mobile style interface haha
