x264 defaults to mbtree=1 and is recommended by x264 devs for good reason.
People who disable it likely don't know what they're doing.

If that were true, the defaults would've been adjusted appropriately.
However, the reality is that x264 devs know much better than stupid internet trolls, and set the defaults to mbtree=1 + rc-lookahead=40 *because* it's a sensible combination.

Higher lookahead certainly helps, but even preset=placebo only raises rc-lookahead to 60.
