I'd recommend K-Lite. Well known, easy to install and use.

K-Lite is not a player. It's a codec pack that has a player (Media Player Classic) bundled in with it.

btw, I never said it was a player, OP asked for a recommendation. I gave him a name and a link. All the info he needs is there. Your comment was of no use whatsoever. Decide if you actually want to help people, like providing a link to the topic.

Well… not really. He gave a great answer in its most concise form.

The kl pack is a player & codecs in a symbiotic relationship: without those bundled codecs the player can't perform most of its magic. And the codecs alone do nothing w/o a player. Best answer, imho.

If you would have simply clicked the link he provided you would have seen that the BASIC k-lite pack is a codec pack you download for all players that accept codec packs. This is how I encountered MPC and later MPC-HC when simply adding codecs to other players did not solve my problems. Other more advanced versions also contain, among other things, a player.

btw: Unlikely, but if you have an older computer or it runs slow, make the following change during or after installation:

Options/output/DirectShow Video/ Enhanced Video Renderer (custom presenter). Instead of madVR.

(madVR may now be the default.)

MPC-HC and madVR:

I forgot to mention, on older computers madVR can cause your cpu to really heat up and get your laptop fans going max. Can madVR kill an old laptop? I don't know. But I have killed an old laptop with playback heat and previous software 10 years ago. (Melted the solder off the processor pins. Probably Nvidia's fault.)

Here's a link to mpv and their FAQ. The FAQ is a good test of whether you have the time and ability to use mpv. I'd say 10% might like it, the rest will wonder why no interface.

MPV-HC x64 is included in k-Lite Mega codec pack. It plays everything from avi to flash to gif to mp3 ... etc. I have old files in storage that play fine with this player. mpv chokes on the same files because they believe being able to play older types of video is a waste of code. If your oldest video files are only 5 or so years old mpv might work fine for you.

MPC-HC or Media Player Classic - Home Cinema is the player I would recommend. You can get it with a simple search. However, The k-lite link provided is your best bet for the most powerful version all in one download along with updates.
Go straight to k-lite mega pac that contains mpc-hc and if you update it every few months you should be able to play anything.
