Is anyone else having problems with this encode? for me it plays on media player classic but freezes kicking CPU up to 100% with VLC, anyone else getting that? What could be the cause?

There are comments on Nyaa and none say this does not play. Sorry have not downloaded this file.
If it works fine for others, (I see no other complaints) then you should update your player or go for more power with the k-lite mega codec pac that has an outstanding media player and codecs to play almost anything.

Cheers. I updated VLC and it works now. I really don't get why media players and codecs keep getting updated. File sizes go up but the quality never seems markedly different. Is there any reason why they can't 'legacy' it so that the file works on older versions? Question open to responses from anyone btw.

If you think about it, it's amazing the players manage to keep up. These shows are recorded from a broadcast system, reconfigured into mkv, mp4 .... etc., by a PC's operating system and the software it uses for the job. All of these are constantly updated/improved independently of each other and at different times for different users. Then it has to be played/viewed on PC's thru video cards/software on monitors/HDTV's. All of these span a 10 year or more tech spectrum with the same update/OS differences.
Just amazing you can download a player that works for your combo of all of the above.

New codecs are quite rare - you probably only get one (popular codec) every few years.
Media players keep getting updated because that's how technological process moves forward. Bug fixes and new features make the player better.
Code is written by humans, so they can have bugs or just have incomplete implementations of a codec (or there could be a new codec and they need to update it to support it).

To be quite honest though, media players don't need updating often at all. Generally stuff works on players over a year old. Contrast this with, say, a web browser.

Is there any way to check the integrity of the file?

Cheers mate, if you are at all willing to educate a dude, how would one go about comparing the hashes on an mkv? Do I need 3rd party software to do that or can I do it using a media player / windows properties?

Commenting because I like my avatar picture, meow!
If you're on Windows, use RapidCRC http://www.ov2.eu/programs/rapidcrc-unicode

Yeah 3rd party software, I use HashMyFiles  http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/hash_my_files.html
It's a stand alone program [Windows] so no need to install, easy to use and Calculates MD5/SHA1/CRC32 hashes of your files

To add to your comment, HashMyFiles is free & really simple to use.
Nir Sofer (the dude who made it) has tons of useful free apps on his site.
