The actual THORAnime version is 7GB for 1080p

File is catered to fans with less bandwidth. CRF 25.

Group name was listed wrong in AT stats, and since I knew the size of the original I thought some might find it useful info.

Movies can be huge, so it's fine to have a smaller preview size before committing to a big download.  But I've never tried any of the many Hi10-Subs chop-downs.

anyone watched it? is this good or low quality?
10/06/2013 18:53 — zooby
It really depends on what your gauge for "good" is.

CRF 25 is alright if you're watching on like, a 720 or 768 screen laptop. But if you're using HDMI and watching on a huge tv, you'll probably notice artifacts and dancing pixels here and there. The original Thora release was probably at CRF 14 or so, so a lot more detail would have been preserved from the BDMV.

If you want the highest possible quality, I'd suggest getting the source rather than something re-encoded.

You can see some comments in here, http://web.hi10anime.com/kumo-no-mukou...-no-basho/

One guy was disappointed that CRF 25 was used.

I've a raw since a lot of time: http://www.nyaa.eu/?page=view&tid=146736 but my hard disk is running out of space, if this is watchable then I can replace it, I'm using a 1080p desktop screen to watch anime.

To me, the preview pictures above look pretty good: sharp, and retain a reasonable amount of picture detail.  There is some banding and other artifacts in sky scenes and other shots, but that's only to be expected in a secondary encode which is about 1/15th the size of the original encode its based on.

But with this relatively small file size, rather than speculate on numbers I would just download it and judge for myself, if I were you.  After that, you might consider upgrading to something better if you really liked the movie, or decide the quality you have is good enough.

Watched just now and I couldn't see any big difference on my 1080p desktop compared to the raw, except scenes with grain and similar full screen effects but, for its size it's ok!

That's good. A lot of "mini" sites aim for that. Trying to retain quality while lowering the filesize. Hi10 is one of the more well known sites that are usually pretty good at this.

1. Thumb up or thumbs down on the movie content itself?  Must watch, should watch, might watch, did watch?

2. Would you say the preview pictures here at AT provided a useful representation of the video quality of the movie?
11/06/2013 22:04 — Anonymous
1) The movie I really liked it, even though it's still in second place compared to 5 centimeters per second, but it definitely deserves thumbs up! (I wonder if in the future we're going to have a thumbs up/down system here on TA? it would be useful I think).

2) For the pictures the quality is great, as jpg snapshots probably there's a minor quality loss compared to the original frames (maybe use bitmap?), but they still helped to understand the overall quality, at least for me, that's why I got interested in this file at first.

Images are uploaded in lossless PNG format, but Imgur likes to worsen the stuff you give them for lols.
I don't really know what the good image hosts are out there, so if you know of any which don't decimate uploaded pictures, have a straightforward API, generous size limits, don't pull too many shenanigans (like randomly deleting images frequently) and are fairly stable, then I'm interested.

I think the preview pictures are very useful.  I asked the question because more often I compare pictures across productions or look for general quality, but I don't as often compare the preview to the actual movie/show it came from, especially for minimal encodes where it might matter more but work differently.  Although apparently not in this case at least.

Across productions or for basic sharpness I often see substantial differences that seem to correspond to what people later report.   As long as Imgur screws over everything the same way, I guess it works out.

Someimage is quite good http://someimage.com/ .I would have said imgbox, but that seems to have added ads to it which are a bit intrusive.Someimage is basically the same layout but without the ads.

Thanks for the tip!
Automated scripts don't really mind ads, so that isn't an issue, but will have to see how stable/reliable they are.
