My new system for watching index: save 2 episodes, then watch the previous episode again, then the 2 new ones. Hopefully I can then keep up with the mazy plotlines and insane amounts of characters.

I think westerners have problems with it as their minds developed with the alphanumeric writing system, whearas young asians have to navigate and memorise all those kanji characters, meaning the far eastern mind can easily follow this type of thing, its not uncommon in (later volumes of) mangua this type of intricacy.

The fact that the franchise is popular in the west as well as the east means that there are no particular differences to be accounted for.

Practically every western anime forum has confused threads on IS3. Most common criticism is that every week feels like the first episode of a new series, rather than a continuation of an ongoing story.

It is probably true that fewer westerners have read these stories ahead of watching the shows, but that is to be expected. Shows need to stand on their own merits, and in this case they sometimes don't. That is all there is to it, not what alphabet they grew up with. The simplest explanation is the best one until there is compelling evidence to the contrary. And forum browsing is meaningless. What percentage of people who watch the shows also browse and write in the forums? Probably very low single digits. And who are these self-selected people? Who knows. There is a science to survey work, if you're really interested and it is time, money and labor intensive. And the same shows that are popular in the east are popular in the west anyways.
