The problem may be the ass file is bigger than what AT limits allow.

I'm guessing the limit is around 100MB uncompressed. It "should be" whatever the one paying for storage decides.

As above commenter alluded to, limit is set to 96MB (uncompressed; PGS .sup files have a larger limit). If any attachment file exceeds that size, it skips processing attachments. It's mostly a safety measure to keep the script sane, as subtitles are generally nowhere near that size.

I've decided to up the limit to 160MB from now on, as I think there's leeway for that, so hopefully this reduces the likelihood of skipping.

I've worked on many fansubs and sometimes scripts are easily 150+MB per episode due to lots of signs requiring advanced typesetting and kfx. I've seen a handful that hit 400MB range.

Yeah, the dedication to do that in ASS is quite something, though fancy draw effects and the like are more the exception than the rule.
400MB sounds crazy - it isn't unusual to find entire episodes smaller than that. I'd also imagine that many subtitle renderers would choke on it as well - not only the attachment storage system. Oh well...
