The subject comes up here at AnimeTosho every now and then, so pardon a newbie question but is anime racist?  I have seen some anime with fat-lipped, big nosed characters.

No anime is not racist. Only some people on the planet seem to be racist which is really sad. The closest I've seen is when one producer made a comment that the story he did was intented for Japenese people. I like to think that stories are for everyone.

Certain characteristics like that are used to distinguish different characters. It's not like live action, where you can see all the subtle details. Hair color, facial features and whatnot are used for that purpose.
