In case you wondered about the 2.8GB file size for 1 episode, FFF says:  "This is the only ep that is so big due to the grain all over the scenes. Rest varies between 600-850MB for 720 version."

Grain: It does a hd manufacturer good.

(Also: "We’re using updated TV batch scripts which English LN readers should find more familiar compared to the original.)

Note: You are getting 125% more pixels than the 720p version, with only a 113% greater file size.  So this is the economic better choice.

So the fact that they use crf = 14 had nothing to do with the size. Pretty stupid if you ask me, but whatever.

Itʻs probably that too. I think FFF's BDs of Aquarion EVOL were 14.5. A lot of people these days are demanding "quality" I guess.

It needs the bitrate if you've seen the show.

The qcomp = 0.8 would also be a significant factor in the large file size.
If they're trying to preserve grain, as mentioned above, a low crf and high qcomp make sense I suppose.
