What with the subtitles all being compsed of little rectangles per the preview images?

The first subs track is kanji. It displays ok as kanji in potplayer. The second subs track is English, so manually select it if your player doesn't have English set as the preference.

Using a non unicode font (Open Sans Semibold) for unicode content. Easily avoidable with minimal QC. Font select fails are visible in player logs (for sure in mplayer and mpv).

As a side note, you can see the second subtitle stream by replacing the ?s=3 bit at the end of the URL with ?s=4 (or remove it completely to not render subtitles).

I'm not sure of the details, but I suspect that if the given font can't render the characters, the player may choose another font, so it may end up looking fine on your system. The server renderer is more 'pure' in that it doesn't have any fallback fonts.
