It's 12bit, just avoid anything that says HEVC2 like many of us do. 12bit from an 8bit source is just stupid.

i use shak codecs in my windows boxes and everything is fine, vlc kinda sucks

it's more like vlc is shit.
just use mpv if you're on windows/linux, many fansubs recommend it.
even mpc is fine.

i agree with you. making 12 bit from 8 bit sources dosen't add a thing over 10 bit. even some mobile devises are starting to play 10 bit but not 12

Decoding (software) should be no problem on VLC 3.x. This is likely a problem with the output driver, not handling the 12-bit frame properly (mpv uses a software auto-conversion in this cases, which works, but eats CPU time). The Opengl output driver should typically work (as it supports bit conversion on the GPU). Maybe try it.
