This is wmv.  I've never seen anything in wmv format that wasn't fake or crap.  And wmv can execute unrelated software in Windows.

Leave alone.

Hardsubbed too
Q 30/05/2013 21:33 — Anonymous
Can it really,i have never heard of that before. How does it work?.Also be careful about calling stuff crap on here;reading the previous comments and it seems there are  people on here who respond horribly to such comments for no good reason.

bitch, stop misleading people into thinking your file is safe. WMV IS SHIT BY ITSELF.
30/05/2013 23:50 — Anonymous
Calling a whole technology crap, like wmv, is obviously different from calling a single person or group's work as being crap.

The person who called a guy's encodes crap gave no basis for saying that because he had none.  He had a different agenda, which is revenge against someone who he thought didn't give him proper respect or attention or bromance.  And now he's wasting all of our time with his silly vendetta.

I hope that clears things up for you, you unrelated sensitive viewer...

It actually sounds like all the things you said are what your doing, holding a grudge against someone who insulted you, being over sensitive, and wasting peoples time by bringing it up here again.

Other anon probably recognized that you're the user that called Animenow's stuff "shit".

Here's two other interesting facts to pass along:
1. The guy that's been bugging us with all the rar viruses at AT and Nyaa came on Nyaa's chatbox to try and convince people to open his files.  As he was getting laughed out, his last message was to badmouth AnimeNOW.  Small Cybe-rverse, huh?

2. The guy who's been badmouthing AnimeNOW (There is only one guy, but he likes to pretend he's a crowd) first played friendly down in channels and got some of AnimeNOW's personal info, like first name and location.  He then went in the Nyaa chatbox and tried to humiliate AnimeNOW by releasing that personal information.  That is classic, worst of the worst Cyberbullying.  And now someone comes here and cries about being cyber-bullied.  Small Cyber-verse, huh?

Summary: If you want to say it nice, this jerk is playing games with all of us.  I can think of better ways to describe him though.
31/05/2013 02:09 — Anonymous
Any proof then?.Chat logs, etc.Or is it all a ploy to try and act like a victim of some grand scheme.I have seen comments by AnimeNOW claiming commie and other groups  are bullying him because he's a small group [why would they?],yet when asked for proof that these groups where doing it he did not have any to back up the statements and just said yeah your from the group and just trying to get me to say the name of them. Also i made a few of the comments on here you mentioned against them because i did not like the groups releases and do not appreciate being called a criminal hacking peoples accounts and personal info when i have  never and have no knowledge of even how to do so.So back your comments with so called 'facts' or stop lying while trying to make innocent people out to be what they are  criminals .Do everyone a favor and leave the site because you know your lying .
01/06/2013 01:14 — Anonymous
Still no reply to your post claiming an innocent person is a hacker, thief, and worse without any evidence.       I think you should be ashamed of yourself for it and apologize if you are a man and have any dignity. You was trolled and you responded with false claims and insinuated they are criminals because you got your feelings hurt when they bad mouthed your releases. One last thing ,i am sorry to anyone i have offended on here in the past and i will not post again if it is going to result in more things happening like this because i like this site and think it is doing a good job for Anime DDL.

The only known threat in wmv files that I currently know of is an exploit based on host misdirection. The file contains info on where to go to check on things like digital rights. You are sent to a web site loaded with malware which comes in via Internet Explorer (which you might not even notice was running). The misdirection part comes in when the site the software thinks it's looking up is on a safe list, but the actual site is another one entirely. Note that this is a problem even if you use a safer browser.

MS has been aware of this for some time and many of the "security" patches for MS-Windows Media Player deal with issues such as these. So keep your Media Player updated, or better yet, don't use it. Best of all, don't download/use wmv files (I don't). Stick to straight mpeg formats.

Note that there are usually a lot of undiscovered flaws in programs that handle media files which are found out once in a while and exploited. E.g., there have been 2 buffer overflow flaws found in the zlib library in recent years. zlib is used by a lot of programs. So viewing the wrong gif file with an unpatched zlib library could lead to Bad Things.

I cannot comment on mov files. I again much prefer mpeg.

There's also a social engineering threat. Some WMV files require you to obtain a license before you can watch them, which means using a little browser window to do something or other - sign in to an account, enter a credit card number, watch an ad, etc. Any type of browser exploits or misleading banner ads you might find on a regular web page might also be present on that page.

Even when there's nothing overtly malicious on the license page, you're still connecting to the server and letting someone know you're watching the video. Some of the WMV files I've seen don't require an account or payment, they just open a page and then you can click a button to start the video. Why would they bother with the DRM at all in that case? I can only suspect they're up to no good.

Best to stick to MPG or AVI files. With those, you know what you're getting.

WMV (Windows Media Player) trojan in wild
Video files appear that download malicious application when they are run

These files are .wmv files infected by Trj/WmvDownloader.A and Trj/WmvDownloader.B, two Trojans that take advantage of a new technology incorporated in Microsoft Windows Media player to install spyware, adware and dialers, as well as computer viruses

PandaLabs has detected the appearance of two new Trojans, Trj/WmvDownloader.A and Trj/WmvDownloader.B, which are spreading through P2P networks in video files. These Trojans take advantage of the new technology incorporated in Microsoft Windows Media player called Windows Media Digital Rights Management (DRM), designed to protect the intellectual property rights of multimedia content. When a user tries to play a protected Windows media file, this technology demands a valid license. If the license is not stored on the computer, the application will look for it on the Internet, so that the user can acquire it directly or buy it. This new technology is incorporated through the Windows XP Service Pack 2 + Windows Media Player 10 update.

The video files infected by these Trojans have a .wmv extension and are protected by licenses, supposedly issued by the companies overpeer (for Trj/WmvDownloader.A), or protectedmedia (for Trj/WmvDownloader.B). If the user runs a video file that is infected by one of these Trojans, they pretend to download the corresponding license from certain web pages. However, what they actually do is redirect the user to other Internet addresses from which they download a large number adware (programs that display advertisements on screen), spyware, dialers (applications that dial-up high rate toll numbers) and other viruses. Below are some examples of the malicious programs and viruses these Trojans download:

Adware/Funweb
Adware/MydailyHoroscope
Adware/MyWay
Adware/MyWebSearch
Adware/Nsupdate
Adware/PowerScan
Adware/Twain-Tech
Dialer Generic
Dialer.NO
Spyware.AdClicker
Spyware/BetterInet
Spyware/ISTbar
Trj/Downloader.GK

Thanks for the info .I never knew this site was so hostile either, asking a simple question makes me a bitch who spreads virus's apparently when i had never even seen the file before.

Sorry.  We've been getting abused a bit lately, one way or another, by fake files and fake people and we're not happy about it.  If you're neither of the above, visit again sometime and catch people in a better mood.

I was just trying to ask a simple question about wmv virus's and have no intention of taking insults like being called a virus spreader , bitch or listening to someone trying to bring up his old grievances and trying to start arguments on an unrelated question because someone said his releases where shit  .Thanks for the reply.

thanks for the info

Just FYI.
This sounds like an issue with Windows Media Player (or possibly the MS codecs) rather than the WMV format itself. So basically, if you don't use WMP, then you're not going to be subject to exploits which rely on it.

In general, it's quite unlikely that a video file contains any virus/malware. Whilst it may be theoretically possible to exploit certain implementations of a codec, this isn't limited to WMV, and in general, these are relatively difficult to apply in practice (that is, there's often much simpler ways to infect someone than trying to embed it in a video file).

The 'fake' files often had a WMV video instructing users to download some other dodgy software - note that the WMV file itself is likely safe.

I wouldn't suspect these files to be dangerous. Whether or not you consider these worthy of downloading, however, is another story.
