Yeah, I'll add them once they my site comes back online (they're currently looking into it).
24/02/2014 17:15 — mercer
ok nice

26/02/2014 03:38 — mercer
any update about links??
26/02/2014 03:53 *Tibb
Yeah, they gave me a new server (after a critical error on my previous one) and now I have set it up again (from scratch). Currently waiting for OS installation.
Don't worry, I'll let you know once it's ready.
26/02/2014 03:54 — mercer
thnx
for good news.

Okay, I got my site up and running, a bunch of ddl links are already there

http://www.yukinoshita.eu/yukinon/ddl/

Torrents that are downloading are in a different dir (non-viewable), once they are done they will be moved to the above directory.
This time around I'm skipping (or should be skipping) 1080p releases to conserve space.
Files are kept for a 90 day period (limit will be lowered based on remaining capacity)
Anything that the server skips, I can add if requested, just ask. 1080p too.+
If somebody wants the kamigami release, let me know - I'll add it again.

@mercer your requests are being downloaded if not already done.
27/02/2014 09:53 — mercer
thnx bro for links.

1. Tibb, congrats on the revival of your site.  I would be interested what the problem turned out to be.  But whatever.  You'll still be looking for special requests here on AnimeTosho pages, I assume.

2. I can't fault your new 720p-except-requests policy.  And I can't justify my 720p-is-the-new-480p attitude.  But maybe I'll try an unjustified-1080p request one day.

3. Looking for a name for your new website?  How about "AnimeTibb"?  Maybe AT-Too? (sounds like a Star Wars character)  Or AT-AT?  (sounds like weapons fire)  Or "The Tibbsonian Institute of Far-Eastern Graphic Arts?" (to fool some of the people, some of the time)  Or "F.L.A.T.U.S.? ("A" for Anime, "T" for "Tibb".  The rest to be filled in later.  "F.A.R.T." also works, but you'd get too many casual visitors.)

Yeah, I originally I waited a bit to purchase a domain since I had no idea what to name it, then I decided to name it after one of my favourite waifu, there was other contenders, such as Kuroyukihime, renge-chon, and more recently renge-chan.

I ended up going with Yukino Yukinoshita, because she started the Service Club and has a sense of "noblesse oblige", she believes it is the duty of the exceptional to help others. I thought that applied well for a DDL server, so I stuck with that.

I don't know what happened to the previous server, all I know it was a "critical" hardware issue and I had to get a whole new one.

Should I maybe change it so it grabs the 1080p releases but excludes the HS ones? Would people like that?

1. 1080p except Horrible would be great for me.  As trends go, it seems to me that 1080p used to be about 1/4 of Nyaa downloads when there was a choice.  Now it seems about half.  So I sense a growing desire for it.  And multi-part 1080p files can be especially painful.  (Miku was 18 DevHosts, I think).  My own thinking is that my next TV will be 2160p (could have been already) and double that a few years later, and 720p on those screens might disappoint in a big way.

2. Domain: You've given it a lot of thought.  All good choices.  It wasn't until he named his second server that I was able to triangulate some plausible-probably-bogus meaning into admin's choice of character names.  (And he admits nothing, so far.)

3. I'd like to have an OS that talked back to me like renge-chon.  As it is, I have an OS that is as predictable as renge-chon.

4. Server: "Critical" Hardware issue.  That usually means either the NSA hacking chip was defective or the Chinese back-door.

Intresting read but no suprise since 2008 most broadcasters would only allow 1080i/p for broadcasting with the exception of cartoons which could be 720 upscaled but subject to approval. But not sure about Japanese broadcasters rules but reading that article just seems the same.

I wonder if it's changed since 2012 when the article was written?

Hey Galaxy_Defenders if you really want to get idea of what 720p is going to look like on a 2160p screen. Get the best quailty 480p video you have and crop it to 16:9 (make sure it is not a scale down but an actual cut to size). Then watch it on your 1080p screen this should give you a general idea. The reason for the crop is most 480p stuff is based on 4:3 so without the crop the quality will be slightly better.

You can also try this with a still image (720X405) and view that image on your 1080p as full frame. Just make sure the image has lots of detail ;) Although if the still image has lots of compression or crappy fromat it'll look worse then the video.
28/02/2014 09:14 — Galaxy_Defenders
To show the depths of my depravity, I find 720p disappointing on my present 1080p big-screen.  I want lots more detail --when I can get it.
28/02/2014 09:18 *admin
I'd have to disagree with that. 720p has the same spatial detail regardless of what the screen resolution is.
A higher resolution screen doesn't make your images look worse.

Actually, 720p would look better on a 2160p screen than it would on a 1080p screen due to denser pixels masking upscaling artefacts, and just simply having more freedom for the upscaler to perform better. Although in reality, you'd be hard pressed to see a difference.

If you're referring to comparing 720p against native 2160p content being like comparing 400p against native 1080p, it makes a little more sense. However, sensitivity to spatial complexity isn't linear (like most human senses, it's more logarithmic), so I'd say a fairer comparison would be 1024x576 against 1920x1080.
Of course, this all assumes a source which makes perfect use of the resolution available. This is rarely the case though.
28/02/2014 09:26 — Galaxy_Defenders
Actually, I want greater res.  I'm not so concerned about 720p in the future.  I want crisp watercolor paintings with a storyline and characters.
28/02/2014 09:40 *admin
I want crisp watercolor paintings
No you don't.
You want my patent-pending 4D smellovision quad-retina VR system with circumaural balanced true-fidelity sound and full-body sensory deprivation & stimulation capabilities.

"If you're referring to comparing 720p against native 2160p content being like comparing 400p against native 1080p, it makes a little more sense."

Yes that is what I meant. It was only to give a general idea of what it might look like. Nothing more. You can't see the real thing till it's out and you have one. So this is what I suggested the poor mans way. I picked 405 to 1080 since it would be a similar upscale like 720 to 2160.

I'm sure the current 1080 TV's have a good upscaler too, since my 480p files (if not VHS source) & DVDs look great. Oh! I think my compter is responsible for the files ooops.

28/02/2014 10:25 — admin
I'm sure the current 1080 TV's have a good upscaler
They're usually a piss poor bilinear resample.
Would recommend trying something more decent, such as spline36.
28/02/2014 10:39 *alpeia2
Actually would the TV upscaler really matter if we are using our computer and it's videocard. The upscale would be  controlled by the playback app/videocard which would send it out at full res. Unless of course it's a smart TV and you have a drive connected. So never mind. I'll go to sleep now, it's way past my bed time...
28/02/2014 12:23 — admin
If your PC is outputting at the native resolution and the TV isn't trying to do something funny like overscan, then the TV's upscaler isn't being used.
