Thanks for the uploads but for everyone of these files they crash VLC 2.0.1 instantly.  I hear there ain't a lot of love for VLC 'round these parts, but does anyone know why and what they will play on?  Thanks.

These are all Hi10p format.  They will crash any except the latest version of VLC which specifically says it can play this format.  However, even if you have the latest VLC (I don't know which version number that is now), it could still crash if you don't have sufficient hardware.  720p-Hi10P can require 3.5 times the calculations that are involved in 720p-8bit.  The publishers of the H.264 standard recommend the Intel "Sandy Bridge" series: i3, i5, and i7, as it has some hardware decoding built in for H.264.  At the least, you need a multi-core cpu of some kind.

For all that, Hi10P may be one of the most disappointing "upgrades" you'll ever struggle with: the video is slightly better for anime, and the file sizes are slightly smaller, or huge -depending on how it's done.

Your main alternative to VLC for Hi10P is found at http://www.cccp-project.net/

I forgot to mention: On a more substantive note, the folks at Zurako-Subs have gone to great lengths to explain the back-story and mythologies involved in this title.  Check it out at http://zurako.wordpress.com/ if you like to know more about that sort of stuff.  (They also are doing the BD, also in Hi10P only.  No other BD's I'm aware of right now.)

Thanks a lot for posting the info. I might want to point out a few things though.

3.5x more calculations seems excessive. Even if true, from my observations, it isn't anywhere close to 3.5x slower.
From what I've read, the Intel QuickSync decoder only goes up to High profile (8-bit), so that won't help you, though a fast CPU will. I actually don't think there's any consumer level hardware which can decode 10-bit H.264 at preset.

I watch 720p Hi10P videos on my netbook running a single core Intel Atom N270 1.6GHz CPU (the slowest Intel Atom I believe?), and it runs fine 99% of the time, but a multicore processor certainly improves decoding speed with a decoder like ffmpeg-mt.
