He didn't say they were brand new. They still are modern though. Being the latest thing doesn't mean it's the greatest just look at all the recalls on newer cars. My house is about 25 years old now and it's still a modern house even though some of the building techniques and specs have changed since then. My dudes, my dudes, let's all take a breath. I've loved 264 and 265 for years, and no one ever said "ugh 265? why are you using this? just use 264." My media player software is from 2016 and it plays 264/265 and it can't play av1 smoothly so obviously av1 is bad, so I'll tell everyone not to use it.

And those AV1 companies, the governing members of the Alliance for Open Media are Amazon, Apple, ARM, Cisco, Google, Huawei, Intel, Meta Platforms, Microsoft, Mozilla, Netflix, Nvidia, Samsung Electronics and Tencent. They're wrong. AV1 isn't taking off, I don't see this becoming a thing.

AV1's better than H.265 at low bitrates, like billion times better, but what it's missing is compatibility.. it's still too hard on the device and has too many issues with decoding. H.264's still the best to go with as of 2025 and probably for a few more years.

It's unfair to say that AV1's not taking off though, Youtube uses it widely (for example) with a VP9 fallback version for devices who can't play AV1 and it works fine... So never say never.
