Some next level shit right here. The uploader at nyaa clearly know what he's doing. Works fine an looks good even on my tired i3. And just look at dem file sizes hnnnnggg.

They look decent for the size but other than size they lack a lot of detail and the audio just plain sucks. Plenty of the mini HEVC encodes look the same or better and have better audio.

Idk, with my skullcandy crushers the audio seems decent to me. Then again I'm not that much a stickler for quality and this is more of a showcase for the video codec. AV1 is practically the next x265, better compression size and unencumbered by licensing, still in its infancy, expect it to get better with age.
The title itself tells you that there are still problems but 20 min episodes 1080p with decent quality in under 50 megs is something to write home about IMO.
The fact that it runs decent on a old underpowered laptop is just icing on the cake.

AV1 is the open, royalty-free response to HEVC. To escape HEVC licensing, they have developed AV1 codec.
However HEVC is still ahead considering both size and quality of encodes. But competition is always good for industries and consumers.

Alongside the codecs, another factor that determines an encode's quality is the encoder's expertise who chooses the source and encoding settings. In this case, the encoder has compressed the video too much (only ~40MB per ep!) and the videos are obviously bit-starved.
