Yea it's an executable hiding behind the old style windows .scr file, which is just an exe but was using by windows for the longest time to identify screen savers in C:\Windows

This is a virus. Not only does my antivirus detect it as malware (thankfully), but the name and timing is also off.

I unrared it earlier and tired to open it in a text editor on Mac. Could that have triggered it? I deleted it immediately after.

No, *.scr files only run on windows. You're safe unless you tried to run it in wine or something.

My understanding is that malicious things are OS specific, so it would probably not affect a Mac.

But I haven't kept up on the Mac scene.  Whatever anti-malware protection anyone offers, this might be a good opportunity to update on.

Mods, Please delete this entire post. Currently, the dl links are still active and thru your comments section they can be reached. If it can be downloaded here it can easily be used for mischief.

My understanding is that deleted pages like this don't appear in the home page listings or in search anymore, but only by following the comments trail.  If so, I wouldn't think it poses much of a risk or merit further effort.
