I downloaded six different groups versions of episode 1 and only preferred BiliBili over this one. This might no be everyones fave version, but it is not even remotely related to what this community would call a troll sub.

Had no problems with the v1 playing on MPC-HC. Added the v2 patch, but have not watched both versions to find the changes.

Thanks. Horriblesubs is usually my goto, they really fucked up on index, I think they really dropped the ball (Too big to fail? I think not). Its time to support the small groups, Horriblesubs can have a future of releasing anime for the filthy casuals and the lolicons. Fuck 'em.

While I think they fetched the wrong subs to share where Index is concerned, I have to admit that they are usually better than this.
Still, overall they are my hero for sticking it to the pay to view creeps, who worked so hard to kill off the rich fan sub community that they viewed as just competitors who cheated by giving subs to everyone free of charge.

To be fair, Horriblesubs has honorifics maybe like 70% of their releases, but anglosizing honorifics on Index is a bad one for sure

HorribleSubs doesn't modify subs. It's an automated bot that rips Crunchyroll, Amazon, HIDIVE, etc... and simply restyles to their choice of font.

Don't fall for the joke that HS is a fansub, lol. They use to say on their site that they're only a rip group, but so many dumb "anime fans" seriously thought they were subbing every single show, so they decided to play along with the joke, then even more people fell for it. Shoot a recent Twitter poll showed that nearly 66% of HorribleSubs Twitter fanbase thinks they do their own fansubs. ~_~

When the biggest portion of "anime downloaders" don't even comprehend that HS isn't a fansub, it's pretty clear they're not the voice of reason as to what should or shouldn't be in subtitles.

As to the claim that "pay to view streams" like Crunchyroll killed fansubbing. Maybe in a way, but I'd argue groups like HorribleSubs had just as much, if not a much larger impact, on the death of fansubs. Streaming services filled the niche of those looking for legal stream options. HorribleSubs offered downloads for those that prefer downloads over streaming, and their bot could dish them out rapidly and the average anime fan would eat it up. When HS gets like 20K downloads, and a fansub that spend days working on TLC, Edit, Proper Timing, KFX, and nice TS end up releasing nearly a week later to only a couple 100 downloads; it makes groups feel their existence is kind of meaningless and motivation quickly dies out. Add the fact that the anime community and anonymous commenters are typically toxic af, and suddenly fansubbers just don't give a shit anymore.

Some good points there. I lean toward Horrible being a positive influence overall. Even the free streaming sites rely on them. Yes there are downsides and I hope my glass half full view is justified.
I view the re-growth of the free subs fanbase along with debates over things such as pay sub translations (ripped or not) are positive signs that the fan sub community has a future.

But what can the average anime watcher do to improve the situation? Is it now just a case of watching watever rip HS puts out on airday, then finding a better version later, and maybe making sure the groups that do the better versions get some glory / appreciation / donations etc?
