No subtitles appear with VLC

That's why you shouldn't use VLC anymore. Nowadays there are better alternatives to VLC.
You can try K-Lite Codec Pack, Potplayer or mpv.

Skimming through the episodes and the movie, it seems like most of the episodes are out of sync for me with media player classic.

being a couple of years old, you have a few options, if you were asking:

-try other media players, like K-lite.
-try manual adjustment of audio/subs lag with your player
-find another encode

How to Fix Media Player Classic Out of Sync Audio....
- Click 'View' in menu
- Click 'Options'
- Click 'Audio Switcher' -  Check mark 'Audio Time Shift'
- Type in amount in box Examples: -2000 or 2000 (   - obviously for minus. You don't need to add + for positive range).

Ive found that most out of sync audio is somewhere between the range of -8000 to 8000 though on occasion it could be more or less. Keep in mind Time shift is permanently where you set it in video player until you either uncheck box or change number to 0.

If I download an out of sync upload I usually list the correct Audio Time Shift setting in comments to save others the hassle.

People who use old software tend to have old hardware.  If so, lag can be a problem.  Look for x264 encodes instead of hevc is about all you can do.

3000 downloads on Nyaa, one person complained of sync problems.

Already watched this and not going to download it just to check if its out of sync.
Unless you have actually checked no need to bash the guy. Amount of downloads mean nothing. Not everyone bothers to report problems and also downloads don't necessarily mean watched. I have probably a few thousand series downloads Ive never watched. Many people keep a deep library.

"bash"?  Aren't you touchy.

What else would you call with you making negative assumptions without checking?  You assume that either his hardware must be old or because there were 3000 downloads it 100% cant be an uploader mistake. How is negative assumptions based on your gut feelings alone not bashing?

My main laptop is a 2022 Asus 3.30ghz Ryzen 9 5900HS. 2tb nvme gen4 Samsung 980 pro 16gb ram. Isn't much out there video or gaming it cant run but that doesn't mean crap when it comes to most video uploads here. I come across out of sync videos occasionally here that no one else has reported.

Even my 2008 i7 920 quad desktop and my 2012 i7 quad laptop can run 99% of the videos uploaded here except for the rare 4k uploads and maybe Av1.

Maybe you don't call it bashing but when your comment is completely negative based on assumptions its bashing.

I was trying to help someone find and solve a problem.  You have too many problems, all in your personality.

I'm not interested in your kind of problems.

Not here to fight. You did have some good for him suggestions besides the negativity. I have myself have 4 or 5 video players but I still prefer to use old reliable mpc. Personally dont care for the latest Windows Media Player.  Pot player, VLC, and KMPlayer are backups.  I'm comfortable with MPC Klite and will continue to use I until it no longer plays most videos. Klite MPC may be an old player but it usually gets weekly updates so not like its become out of date. Other than AV1 it basically plays everything else

K-Lite Codec Pack can play all 720p AV1 videos even on my ancient 2009 Core2 Duo laptop. It has a hard time playing 1080p HEVC and AV1 (noticeable lag) due to poor hardware. So with your 2022 Asus laptop, you should have no problem playing even 4k AV1.
BTW I suggest you get rid of VLC and KMPlayer and have K-Lite Codec Pack, mpv and Potplayer as media players on your system.

Only problems Ive ever had with Av1 on any system is occasional issues of no sound but thats more to do with MPC than my systems. Thats the only time I even start the other players. Klite MPC works for me without issues 99.99% so cant see myself switching until something changes.

Asus is nice laptop but looking back wish Id went with a 3080gpu of a 3060 but guess it doesn't matter since Ive never gamed on it.

I worked on a few dual core laptops for other and rebuilt a broken one given to me and swapped in fastest compatible cpu, fastest mem, and fastest ssd available. SSD did help but cpu bottleneck pretty much killed any potential because it was still slow as hell. Wasted money but lesson learned.

That said upgrading old quads with ssds have had great results. Made a huge difference despite them being over 10 years old.

Had a 2003 Dell Inspiron 8500 laptop until 2011. Talk about SLOW ..... Old single core Pentium 4. Glad those days are over (single core cpu`s, dial up, etc.)
