This is a surprise, an older Anime being re-released as AVC 1080p (Standard 8bit encodes). None of that 10bit or HEVC crap that has done nothing else but mess up sharing and make it nessasary to have an extra pc or mini pc so you can watch.
Thank you

Only consol morons cries about 10bit and HEVC

I prefer 8bit too, as it's watchable on my smarttv via plex. i have to transcode a lot, but i understand that hevc is the future

Possibilities are endless ...
A smart TV that can't play 10-bit and HEVC is just an expensive, dumb piece of crap while even $100 Android smartphones have no problem playing HEVC.
And yes, it's a sad, absurd and frustrating fact that even 2015 Samsung smart TVs that cost around $1000 can't recognize and play HEVC  (⊙_⊙) (-_-)
What's the difference between a smart TV which can't play HEVC and an old SD TV?!  (o_O) (o_O)

Those "smart" trash is manufactured as long as people buy it. And, according to constant comments here, most consumers just don't get the lesson, that only the electronic hardware companies are to blame. Sad, but true.

To be fair, hardware takes time to develop, and even further time to appear in consumer products. I'm not sure 10-bit HEVC decoders appeared on any ARM SoC before the end of 2014, so a 2015 product not including it doesn't seem unreasonable. TVs also are generally expected to last many years, unlike mobile phones which are often replaced every few years.
Though I think getting a cheap TV box + "dumb" TV is better than getting a smart TV.

H.264 Hi10 profile was standardized in March 2005, High 4:4:4 Predictive in April 2007:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H.264/MP...C#Versions
Don't know any hardwaredecoder, that supports Hi10 and newer H.264 profiles. Software decoding would be possible on any 4 core SoC and above (maybe only 720p for older SoCs). But they didn't even come up with a software solution after 10-12 years. For me: Just ignorance.

Royalty fees.

Thanks for your great statement, that makes everything understandable. Extra royalty fees for usage of Hi10 and newer profiles? Or maybe just testing your keyboard?
Well, could have found it yourself, but here you are:

As you like short term statements: NO

Oh, I thought you meant 10-bit HEVC as opposed to AVC.
Maybe it's because Hi10P never really got popular outside of anime, so no one bothered to invest the time/money to develop a consumer hardware solution. Probably the same with software as well.

I recall Hi10P being adopted by fansub groups around 2011, and at the time you had to use the latest x264 to encode, and in-development versions of decoders to play back 10-bit video. So despite the standard being around for a while, hardly anyone was interested in it, in the consumer space, for a long time.

Probably can't blame the TV makers for the lack of a Hi10P hardware decoder. Software would depend on the CPU the TV has, but even if powerful enough, they probably can't just slap libav* due to licensing restrictions and such. I suspect cheap TV boxes aren't as constrained as TV manufacturers, hence why you can probably do software Hi10P decoding on them.

10-bit is supported in x264 since mid 2010 (starting with limited options):
http://git.videolan.org/?p=x264.git;a=...ec0fa7acb1
So usage beginning in 2011 is very likely.
Haven't looked into it currently, but if I remember correctly, LGPL mode combined with libx264 has been a valid ffmepg build configuration for years. Well, doesn't mean, that it's correct in any legal aspect.
The MPEGLA H.264 licencing for a device doesn't depend on available profiles and the embedded decoding implementation.
All in all, I just want to stress, the my statement about blaming the companies stays valid for me. I don't see any serious problems to provide a (nearly) complete H.264 implementation for mid-range and high-end embedded TV devices build within the last 4-5 years. That's why I totally agree, that the companies probably just want to avoid the time/money considering a small group of consumers.
The companies' policy of feature implementation is fine by me. But I can't stand those statements, that blame groups/encoders for not using 8-bit H.264.
Not to mention, that most TV devices lack a lot more features, that need a proper software solution. For example libass, fontconfig, vorbis/opus/alac...

Agree. 10-bit does offer benefits (anime likely benefits the most in general) so there's reason to use it.
With TV boxes being cheap these days, people should be looking to get one of those, which supports almost any format (assuming the CPU is powerful enough) and should be able to support subtitle rendering (even if extra software is needed to do so).

I can see an issue with mobile devices; even if they can software decode the video, there's a benefit to battery consumption for hardware decoding. But there's often 8-bit options around and one can always convert video easily themselves.

I must say, I haven't looked into the Android TV platform and the availability of apps like VLC for this. But this might be or may become a good option for those, who don't want to go for some single board computer or prebuild boxes as external playback/streaming device. Would be interesting, if someone here is currently using a Android TV Smart TV and can share some experiences with third-party software. Anyone using such a device?

Totally agree, that software decoding will drain the battery on any mobile device, as the efficiency is rather low compared with a ASIC hardware decoder.

4K Blu-rays are 10-bit HEVC.

that's funny. replace 8bit and 10bit in your comment above with mpg and mp4, respectively, and it's probably exactly what your papa whined about back when.
12/12/2016 17:32 — BetaMAX
To get more retro feeling they also used fixed bit-rate, H.264 MAIN profile and re-encoded FLAC to AC-3. And to make this bad setup really overkill: 1080p. Can't take this release serious. My *personal* opinion is: Just some trolling.
17/03/2017 20:27 — Anonymous
AC3 is good replacement for FLAC as as opposed to AAC
12/12/2016 19:11 — Anonymous
For the age of this series, this is a very good release.

Great image quality but annoying resolution. It's not 1080p. It's 4:3 after all.
