They say they've gone to 4-4-4 and a very recent build. If you use VLC, you can try their latest update. If you use MPC-HC you can't use their internal subs rendering. That's a quick take on Nyaa.

I tried updating VLC to the latest version that works on my system, but no joy. Looks like I'm going to have to switch to a different group, which sucks since I have the Commie versions of all the previous seasons and I really wanted to maintain translation consistency. Oh well. Thanks for the troubleshooting.

mpv GUIs/SMplayer replaced vlc long ago.

VLC works now, but renders it incorrectly and overly dark. So I'd definitely avoid using VLC with Hi444PP encodes.

As suggested, all fansubbers recommend mpv for good reason.

If you use MPC-HC you can't use their internal subs

The MPC on my end is fine with 4.4.4, subs & all. Difference may be that k-lite is installed too. Some suggested updating LAV filters if mpc has trouble, but with k-lite this wasn't necessary for me.

Potplayer is fine, but be sure you get last week's update just in case.

Mpc-be works fine
Just switch the subtitle renderer from internal one to vsfilter and it works
Mpc-be is almost the same as mpc-hc

Possibilities are endless ...

As always, MPC-HC (via K-Lite Codec Pack) works like a charm and also renders subtitles with no problem.

The best and most powerful media player on earth is K-Lite Codec Pack (Mega) (Its embeded player is MPC-HC). Other great ones are PotPlayer and SMPlayer. And VLC is too well known to ignore 😉

It's good practice to have at least 2 media players installed on a system e.g KLCP and PotPlayer or KLCP and SMPlayer.

SMPlayer is a great option for those obsessed with mpv but without its hassles 😑 SMPlayer is a GUI for the award-winning MPlayer, which is a powerful command-line multimedia player. mpv is based on mplayer2, which in turn is based on the original MPlayer. Recently SMPlayer has added support for mpv and can now work with both MPlayer and mpv as multimedia engine. (One can simply change the engine via General tab -> Multimedia engine). Like VLC, SMPlayer is multi-platform. (The thing I like the most, between other features, about it is the fact that it has an official portable version 😀)

Most likely is if it doesn't work on VLC those users will dump Commie instead.

Guess VLC users will have to dump a lot of fansub groups entirely then. Because they all do Hi444PP for certain shows.
