Futaba Rentarou inherits a detective agency from his late father, a legendary figure amongst the colourful inhabitants of the Nikotamagawa shopping district. With no family and no ambitions, Rentarou is reluctant to take up the legacy of a second generation detective, until the identical twins Souju and Sara show up on his doorstep with a job request that changes his life forever.

Two years later at the age of 21, Rentarou's carefree daily life with the twins is disrupted by events that forces him to redefine himself once again: Sara manages to blow up Rentarou's detective office, which doubles as his home, whilst trying to shake off the Chinese mafia and Rentarou himself is held hostage by the friendly neighbourhood Yakuza crime syndicate for an incident involving his cat and the boss' bird.
