I don't suppose you've read Around the World in Eighty Days by Jules Verne have you? I guess nowadays reading books is already a quaint thing of the past with all the other forms of entertainment out there, but I believe there are still books that you have to read at least once in your life. And Around the World in Eighty Days is definitely one of those books. What do you think? Hanekawa-senpai.

"I think so... but I don't think you really do, Ougi-chan." Hanekawa-senpai responded, looking somewhat displeased with my friendly question.

Hanekawa-senpai would always have a cheerful smile on her face, but she would never look at me with that angelic smile. That's a real bummer. Boohoo.

"What's with the boohoo... You're the one who's always smiling."

"I suppose so."

It was never an angelic smile. Though people often tell me that I look beautiful when I smile.

"I've heard that once you graduate you're planning on going on a trip around the world. So how was Around the World in Eighty Days? I'm sure you've already read it when you were only a few years old. There's no way you've never read this masterpiece of literature, being the one Araragi-senpai is such a fan of. I'll be really disappointed if you tell me you really haven't read it. It would be like finding out that the title of a book that seemed so exciting I bought it just by the name was actually the editor's idea.

It happens all the time though.

Of course there are so many masterpieces of literature out there that you could spend your whole life reading them and still never finish, so I wouldn't really be that surprised if you've never read any of Jules Verne's work before.

"I have read it. I think it was in second grade."

Well I thought as much when it comes to her.

They do always say to be polite to people you know even if you aren't very close, so I responded "You really do know everything, Hanekawa-senpai.", however I couldn't get her to say her signature line. I suppose she really does hate me. Well my objective in being here isn't to have her like me, so I opted to continue the conversation.

"So what did you think of it? Back then or now, either is fine."

"It was interesting... I guess."

She responded cautiously.

No need to be so tense, this is just a little book report, I'm not trying to lead you into some trap.

"I remember being happy when he passed through Japan on his way around the world. This is digressing from Around the World in Eighty Days, but I always get a little bit excited when Japan pops up in classics from other parts of the world. I know it's obvious but I always think, 'Japan really did exist back then.'."

"Hmm?"

That's quite a unique impression of the book. It doesn't seem like you were just excited to run into a familiar name in a foreign place, however as an avid audience of any sort of story I'd love to delve a little deeper.

"You could say it's objective proof of our existence, like an endorsement by a guarantor. Or the sense of security when you see Japan appear in the eyes of a foreign country in print."

"No, no. I wasn't thinking those sorts of complex things when I was in second grade. In fact, it was more like the feeling that a story I knew was fictional suddenly seemed like it was nonfiction or that it was based on real events or people, or at least that's how it was written... I suppose you wouldn't get it, existence itself seems like a fiction book to you after all, Ougi-chan."

"Oh dear, those were some strong words. I'm not very good at reading between the lines, so my heart throbbed at the thought of a romantic novel about a dashing English gentleman gracefully evading all the obstacles in his way on his journey around the world."

"... Do you even know what a romance is?"

"Excuse me, Hanekawa-senpai. I don't think it would be an exaggeration to say that I'm romanticism itself."

"I think it would be."

"Although I suppose what with preparing for the World Championships soon while scouting out good location destinations around the world, travelling around the world must be more of a real experience than like a romantic novel to you. Have you gotten bored with made-up stories I wonder. Sort of like 'Throw Away Your Books, Rally in the Streets'."

"Hmm, I wonder about that."

"? What was that? You seem dissatisfied. Do you feel like my opinion isn't worth listening to, because my uncle was more of a wandering vagabond than a traveller?"

"Now why would you have to say it like that..."

Hanekawa-senpai said shrugging her shoulders.

"Your uncle Oshino-san travelled all around the country to every little nook and cranny for his job, but I don't think he was 'throwing out his books'. In fact, I think his journey was to collect stories, don't you?"

She said.

I see, that's another way of looking at it.

Of course, Oshino Meme wasn't wandering around going from journey to journey to write a book, however a set of tales collected in the form of a book isn't the only thing that can count as a story.

"The reason the protagonist of Around the World in Eighty Days, Phileas Fogg, goes on his journey around the world was because of a bet with his friends. But if you think about it, just the act of 'going around the world' could count as a book, so you could think of it as a journey to search for a story, or to create one."

"Hmm, having transferred all around to different schools for a while now, I can certainly understand his feelings. I feel like no matter how many times I transfer, it's still a long continuing story I never get used to."

"Really now."

Hanekawa-senpai said, not really believing me. Hehehe, we'll never get along will we. Don't worry, when you set off on your journey, I'll be there happily sending you off. Just like Inspector Fix, I have no intention at all to interfere with your journey, your story. In fact I'd love it if you would go right now.

"By the way, if in 1873 when Around the World in Eighty Days was published, circumnavigating the world in eighty days was possible, I wonder how long it would take now? I think it would only take a few days by airplane... but that wouldn't be much of an adventure."

"Who knows. But even if it's only for a few days, however short the journey might be, when I go I'll bring a book with me."

The books I read while I'm out and about are the most interesting to me - said Hanekawa-senpai. I wonder if her plan all along was to go on a journey without throwing away her books.

Always learning while never losing her playful heart.

I hate that.

With a smile on my face I say:

"... You're quite the fool aren't you."
